Only Derek Michael Chauvin, 44, has been charged in the death of George Perry Floyd. His fellow former Minneapolis Police Department officers Thomas Kiernan Lane, 37, Tou Nmn Thao, 34 and J Alexander Kueng, 26, who were involved in the fatal arrest of the African-American man are still at large.

“They will be charged, we understand,” Benjamin Crump, who represents Floyd’s family, said of Lane, Thao and Kueng when he appeared on the “TODAY” show on June 2, 2020. “That is what the families are hearing from the authorities.”

The authorities have yet to confirm whether or not Lane, Thao and Kueng will be arrested soon. However, Crump said, “We heard that they expect to charge those officers.”

Thao has left Minnesota and is “safely elsewhere,” the Minnesota Star Tribute quoted his awyer Robert Paule as saying. Kueng is believed to be staying with his family in Minneapolis while Lane has left and did not inform anyone where he was going, a relative told the publication.

On May 31, 2020, Dr. Michael Baden and Dr. Alecia Wilson conducted an independent autopsy on Floyd’s body. The preliminary findings of the autopsy revealed that the African-American security guard died of asphyxia due to neck and back pressure, which interfered with his breathing and blood flow to the brain.

Moreover, the weight on Floyd’s back, handcuffs and positioning during his arrest also impaired his ability to breathe, the findings revealed. This means that Chauvin was not the only one who caused the victim’s death.

On May 25, 2020, an employee at Cup Foods at 3759 Chicago Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States called the Minneapolis Police Department to report a customer who was trying to buy cigarettes with a fake $20 bill. It was Lane and Kueng who arrived at the scene first to arrest Floyd, who matched the suspect’s descriptions.

Lane handcuffed Floyd and explained to him that he was arrested for passing counterfeit currency. Chauvin and Thao then arrived in a separate squad car.

For a total of 8 minutes and 46 seconds, Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck while Lane and Kueng were holding the unarmed and handcuffed arrestee’s legs and back, respectively. Thao was watching and interacting with the eyewitnesses.

Floyd died at the scene based on the autopsy conducted by Baden and Wilson. According to the doctors, the cause of death was consistent with what was shown on the videos of the fatal arrest.
