Thomas Kiernan Lane, 37, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States was hired by the Minneapolis Police Department on February 19, 2019. On May 26, 2020, he was fired along with his training officer Derek Michael Chauvin, 44, and their former colleagues Tou Nmn Thao, 34, and J Alexander Kueng, 26, over their involvement in the fatal arrest of George Floyd.
Representing Lane is Earl Gray, an experienced criminal defense lawyer from Saint Paul, Minnesota. The former cop was described as “compassionate and amusing and insightful” by a male relative in an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune.
Lane received his bachelor’s degree in sociology of law, criminology and deviance from the University of Minnesota in 2016. He had a criminal record and numerous traffic violations before joining the Minneapolis Police Department.
