Martin Braithwaite, 29, of Denmark has earned his first goal as an Futbol Club Barcelona player. He achieved this feat when the Spanish professional football club made its La Liga return on June 13, 2020.

Taking place at the Estadi de Son Moix in Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain, the game was between FC Barcelona and Real Club Deportivo Mallorca. It marked the first game of Lionel Messi, 32, of Argentina after the new coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown break.

Braithwaite played up front in the absence of Luis Suárez, 33, of Uruguay. The Uruguayan football player had to settle for a place on the bench since he did not make the starting line-up.

At one point, RCD Mallorca looked dangerous but FC Barcelona found a way to punish the host team nevertheless. When the ball was deflected high into the penalty area, Messi nudged the ball to Braithwaite, who in turn fired high into the net.

Joining Messi and Braithwaite in the FC Barcelona lineup were Marc-André ter Stegen, 28, of Germany, Jordi Alba, 31, of Spain, Ronald Araújo, 21, of Uruguay, Gerard Piqué, 33, of Spain, Sergi Roberto, 28, of Spain, Sergio Busquets, 31, of Spain, Frenkie de Jong, 23, of the Netherlands, Arturo Vidal, 33, of Chile and Antoine Griezmann, 29, of France. Prior to this, the last time the team competed was on March 7, 2020.

Messi is currently the FC Barcelona captain while Busquets is the vice captain. Piqué and Roberto are the respective third and fourth captains.

Braithwaite was born in Esbjerg, Denmark on June 5, 1991 to Guyanese father Keith Braithwaite and Danish mother Heidi Christensen Braithwaite. Martin was called up to the Danish national squad in 2013 and he signed a four-year contract with English Football League (EFL) Championship club Middlesbrough on July 13, 2017.

In January 2019, Martin joined Spanish La Liga side CD Leganés. FC Barcelona signed him on a four-and-a-half year contract on February 20, 2020 and he made his debut on February 22, 2020.
