Swansea, Wales’ Brett Johns earns 5th UFC win at ‘UFC Fight Night 172’ on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi

Brett “The Pikey” Johns, 28, of Swansea, Wales earned his fifth victory in the Ultimate Fighting Championship on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The Welsh mixed martial artist was one of the “UFC Fight Night 172” winners.

Also called “UFC on ESPN+ 30,” “UFC Fight Night 172” featured 12 MMA matches on the UFC Fight Island on Yas Island on July 19, 2020 in the UAE or July 18, 2020 in the United States. Johns fought Montel “Quik” Jackson, 28, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA in the bantamweight division in the fourth bout, which was refereed by Rich Mitchell.

After three five-minute rounds, the bantamweight contest was left in the hands of the three judges, who all scored it 29-28 in favor of the fighter in the red corner. In the end, Mitchell raised the hand of Johns, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

This is the seventh time Johns won a professional MMA bout via unanimous decision. Winning at “UFC Fight Night 172” improved the Welsh MMA fighter’s professional MMA record to 17 wins and 2 losses.

Fighting professionally since 2012, Johns joined the UFC in 2016. The first four opponents he defeated in the promotion were Kwan Ho Kwak, Albert Morales, Joe Soto and Tony Gravely.

On the other hand, Jackson made his UFC debut in 2018. The Milwaukee native now has 9 wins and 2 losses.

 

“UFC Fight Night 172” was the third UFC event to take place on the UFC Fight Island during the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. A total and 17 countries were represented namely Armenia, Brazil, Canada, the DR Congo, England, Georgia, Iraq, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, the U.S. and Wales.

Johns solely represented Wales.  Jackson was one of the four representatives of the US.

In the main event, Deiveson “Deus da Guerra” Figueiredo, 32, of Soure, Para, Brazil was crowned the new UFC Flyweight Champion after his rematch with Joseph Benavidez, 35, of Sacramento, California, USA. In the co-main event, Jack “The Joker” Hermansson, 32, of Norway and Sweden submitted Kelvin Gastelum, 28, of Yuma, Arizona, USA in the middleweight division.
