Juan “The Spaniard” Archuleta, 32, of Sultana, California, United States is the new champion of Bellator MMA in the bantamweight division. The mixed martial artist of Spanish and Mexican descent earned the title at “Bellator 246” on September 12, 2020.
Featuring seven MMA matches, Bellator MMA held “Bellator 246” at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, USA. In the main event, Archuleta and Patrick “Patchy” Mix, 27, of Angola, New York, USA competed for the Bellator Bantamweight World Championship title, which was vacated by former champion Kyoji “The Typhoon” Horiguchi, 29, of Japan on November 27, 2019.
Jason Herzog served as the referee of the “Bellator 246” main event. After five five-minute rounds, the title bout was left in the hands of the judges.
Two judges scored it 48-47 while one saw it 49-46. In the end, Herzog raised the hand of Archuleta, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.
This made Archuleta the eighth MMA fighter to hold the Bellator Bantamweight World Championship belt. Eduardo “DuDu” Dantas, 31, of Brazil held it twice.
Winning at “UFC Vegas 10” improved the professional MMA record of Archuleta to 25 wins and 2 losses. On the other hand, Mix now has 13 wins and 1 loss.
As an MMA fighter, Archuleta has been competing professionally since 2013. He made his Bellator MMA debut in 2018.
Before facing Mix at “Bellator 246,” Archuleta defeated six opponents in Bellator MMA namely Dantas, William Joplin, Robbie Peralta, Jeremy Spoon, Ricky Bandejas and Henry Corrales. Before joining the promotion, Archuleta competed in Gladiator Challenge, California Fight League and King of the Cage, among others.
In 2008, Archuleta won the California Junior College Championship for Sacramento City College in the 141-pound weight class. In August 2016, he married Jannai Archuleta.
Born in Sultana, Archuleta was a wrestler at Sultana High School in Hesperia, California and Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. He is a protege of “The Ultimate Fighter 2” welterweight tournament winner Joe “Daddy” Stevenson, who teaches MMA, wrestling, boxing, kickboxing and jiujitsu at Cobra Kai in Victorville, California.
Aside from pursuing a career in MMA, Archuleta also works as an electrician. The Spanish-Mexican-American MMA fighter will turn 33 on September 13, 2020.
