Paysandú’s Lola de los Santos is Miss Universe Uruguay 2020, crowned virtually

Lola de los Santos Biccò, 22, has been crowned Miss Universe Uruguay 2020. She hails from Paysandú, Uruguay.

De los Santos was one of the six finalists of Miss Mundo Uruguay 2020. Hosted by Nicolas Troncoso, the coronation night on December 13, 2020 was done virtually due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Miss Earth Argentina director Esteban Luna, Miss World Argentina director Nadia Cerri and Miss World Chile director Keno Manzur served as judges. They were joined by makeup artist Marcia Ramirez, social communicator Federico Merello and Gavyani models director Gabriel Viviani.

It was Valentina Camejo who won the Miss Mundo Uruguay 2020 title. The respective first, second, third and fourth runners-up were Jimena Martino, Melissa Benitez, Sharon Alvarez and Abigail Albornoz.

Three more titles were given not to the runners-up but three of the candidates who made it to the Top 15 but not to the Top 6. They were Miss Tourism Global Uruguay 2020 Tamara Etcheverry, Miss Bikini Universe Uruguay 2020 Sofia Monetti and Miss Global City Uruguay 2020 Camila Cabarrot.


Uruguay has been competing at Miss Universe since 1952. De los Santos will be the 68th woman to represent the country in one of the oldest international beauty pageants in the world.

Miss Universe 2020 is expected to take place in the United States in the first quarter of 2021. The exact date and venue have yet to be announced.

This will not be the first time de los Santos is representing Uruguay in an international beauty pageant. The Paysandú native` competed at World Top Model 2017, Miss World 2018 and Miss Continentes Unidos 2018.

The newly crowned Miss Universe Uruguay 2020 is openly gay. She is an advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights.

If de los Santos wins Miss Universe 2020, she will be the beauty pageant’s first ever titleholder from Uruguay. The country has yet to place in the competition since 1986.

Representing Uruguay, Gladys Rubio Fajardo, Ada Alicia Ibáñez Amengual, Ana Moreno and Gabriela Pascal finished in the Top 16 in 1953, in 1953, in 1954 and in 1957, respectively. The country’s Silvia Beatriz Vila Abavian finished in the Top 12 in 1982.

Miss Universe 1985 fourth runner-up Andrea Beatríz López Silva is from Montevideo, Uruguay. She is the only Uruguayan candidate to reach the Top 5 of Miss Universe.
