Congo may refer to either the Republic of the Congo or the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The latter, which is also called Congo-Kinshasa, is larger than the former, which is also known as Congo-Brazzaville.

Called Belgian Congo from 1908 to 1960 and Zaire from 1971 to 1997, the Democratic Republic of the Congo gained its independence from Belgium on June 30, 1960. It is the world’s most populous Francophone country and the 11th largest country.

The Republic of the Congo is one of the largest oil producers in the Gulf of Guinea. Before the establishment of the republic on November 28, 1958 and independence from France in 1960, the country was part of the French Congo along with parts of Gabon, and the Central African Republic.
