The Republic of Burundi is a landlocked country in Eastern Africa. The country is bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and southeast and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west.
In 1916, Belgium started ruling Ruanda-Urundi, which was later known as Rwanda-Burundi. On July 1, 1962, the colonial territory became the two independent states of Rwanda and Burundi.
On November 28, 1966, Burundi became a republic. The country’s incumbent and 10th president Évariste Ndayishimiye, 51, assumed office on June 18, 2020.
