Guam is an unincorporated territory of the United States. It is the largest island in Micronesia in Oceania.
In 1668, Spain colonized Guam, which was captured by the U.S. on June 21, 1898. Under the Treaty of Paris, which was signed on December 10, 1898, Spain ceded Guam to the U.S. effective April 11, 1899.
Hagåtña is Guam’s capital while Dededo is the island’s most populous village. The territory’s incumbent and ninth governor Lou Leon Guerrero, 70, assumed office on January 7, 2019.
