The Republic of Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America. The official language in the country is Spanish and among the ethnic groups living there are Ladino, Maya, Xinca, Afro-Guatemalan and Garifuna.

In the 16th century, Spain conquered Guatemala, which attained independence in 1821. The latter now practices representative democracy.

Biologically significant and unique ecosystems are abundant in Guatemala. Among the top tourist spots in the country are the Mayan Ruins of Tikal, Antigua Guatemala, Lago de Atitlán, the Pacaya Volcano, the Chichicastenango Market, Quetzaltenango, Semuc Champey and Museo Ixchel del Traje Indigena.
