The Islamic Republic of Iran is the 17th most populous country in the world and the second largest country in the Middle East. Also called Persia, the country is located in Western Asia and is bordered by the Caspian Sea to the north, Afghanistan and Pakistan to the east, Turkey and Iraq to the west and the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to the south.

Persian is the official language of Iran. The country’s capital is Tehran, which is also the most populous city in Western Asia.

Iran has 22 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites. Among them are the Cultural Landscape of Maymand, the Armenian Monastic Ensembles of Iran, the Golestan Palace, the Lut Desert, the Naqsh-e Jahan Square, the Tabriz Historic Bazaar Complex, the Caspian Hyrcanian mixed forests and the Persian Garden.
