The Russian Federation covers an area of 17,125,200 square kilometers making it the world’s largest country. Located in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia, it is a transcontinental country with 85 federal subjects.

In 1922, a treaty formed the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) or the Soviet Union uniting the Russian, Transcaucasion, Ukranian and Byelorussian republics, which became the world’s first constitutionally socialist state. Governed by the Communist Party, the union was formally dissolved by the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union in 1991.

With the world’s largest stockpile of nuclear warheads, Russia is one of the five recognized nuclear weapons states. It is also home to 29 United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites.
