The Republic of Uzbekistan is a double landlocked country in Central Asia. The country is surrounded by five landlocked countries namely Kazakhstan to the north, Kyrgyzstan to the northeast, Tajikistan to the southeast, Turkmenistan to the south-west and Afghanistan to the south.
On September 1, 1991, Uzbekistan declared its independence from the Soviet Union. On March 2, 1992, Uzbekistan was admitted to the United Nations.
Uzbekistan’s incumbent and second president Shavkat Mirziyoyev, 63, assumed office on December 14, 2016. On the same day, the country’s incumbent and fourth prime minister Abdulla Aripov, 59, assumed office.
