Professionally known as Daniel Straus, Daniel Mason-Straus, 36, of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, United States was arrested on February 5, 2021. He is a professional mixed martial artist who previously competed in Bellator MMA.
Straus was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The identity of his alleged victim and details of the incident have yet to be released.
Straus’s bond was set at $100,000. He is represented by David Kubiliun, according to the Sun Sentinel.
On February 6, 2021, Judge Terri-Ann Miller left Straus’s bond at $100,000. If released, he will be prohibited from contacting his alleged victim and from possessing weapons or ammunition.
Raised in Fields Ertel, Ohio, Straus wrestled in Sycamore High School in Cincinnati but dropped out after his junior year. He was incarcerated on robbery charges in 2004 and was released from prison in 2007, Yahoo! Sports reported.
On February 7, 2009, Straus made his professional MMA debut in Xtreme Fighting Organization (XFO). On June 24, 2010, he made his Bellator MMA, which was then called Bellator Fighting Championships.
On May 11, 2012, Straus won the Bellator Season Six Featherweight Tournament Final by defeating Marlon “The Gladiator” Sandro, 43, of Santo Amaro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil via unanimous decision at “Bellator 68.” On March 1, 2013, Straus was arrested in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA and was charged with driving with a suspended license, being in possession of more than 20 grams of cannabis, more than 3 grams of synthetic cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), ESPN reported.
On November 2, 2013, Straus became the Bellator Featherweight World Champion by defeating Pat “Pady Mike” Curran, 33, of Crystal Lake, Illinois, USA via unanimous decision at “Bellator 106.” The former lost the title to the latter when they had their rematch at “Bellator 112” on March 12, 2014.
On January 16, 2015, Straus failed to regain the Bellator Featherweight World Championship title after being submitted by Patricio “Pitbull” Freire, 33, of Natal, Rio de Grande do Norte, Brazil at “Bellator 132.” The Cincinnati native won the title in their rematch at “Bellator 145” on November 6, 2015.
Freire challenged Straus at “Bellator 178,” which marked the third time they fought each other in Bellator MMA. The challenger won the Bellator Featherweight World Championship title via submission.
On December 17, 2017, Straus was involved in a motorcycle accident and was confined to a hospital in Florida. He told Bleacher Report, “I’m currently recovering and will hopefully be returning to the Bellator cage sometime soon.”
After the accident, Straus went on hiatus. He competed again in Bellator MMA with one win on March 29, 2019 and one loss on September 7, 2019 before going on hiatus again.
