Jacob Smitson, 24, of Orleans, Orleans Township, Orange County, Indiana, United States was recently arrested in Bedford, Shawswick Township, Lawrence County, Indiana. He was charged with obstruction of justice, resisting arrest by fleeing and force and possession of methamphetamine.
Smitson previously lived in Paoli, Paoli Township, Orange County and worked at Paoli Peaks- Ski Ride Tube. He attended Paoli Junior-Senior High School.
On March 2, 2021, a Bedford Police Department officer tried to stop Smitson for a traffic violation in Bedford, WBIW reported. The Orleans resident tried to flee but when his vehicle was eventually stopped, he told the officer that he pulled into the wrong drive while going to a Taco Bell.
The officer asked Smitson if he had anything illegal on him. The latter said he had a prescription in his pocket before turning from the officer and refusing to stop.
Smitson ran through the parking lot where he was tackled and handcuffed by the officer after a brief struggle. The Orleans man was transported to jail.
Officers found a crystal substance in the police car seat where Smitson sat and it tested positive for methamphetamine. The arrest happened three days before his 25th birthday.
Platted in 1815, Orleans was named in commemoration of the Battle of New Orleans. Since 1823, a post office has been in operation at the town.
Orleans has a lending library, the Orleans Town and Township Public Library. The town is home to national historic districts Jenkins Place and Orleans Historic District.
