Xiao Zhen Xie, 76, of San Francisco, California, United States was praised for attacking her attacker Steven Jenkins, 39. The San Francisco Police Department arrested the attacker on March 17, 2021 but his name was not revealed until March 18, 2021.
Xie is of Chinese descent. She has been a resident of San Francisco since 1994.
At around 10:30 a.m. on March 17, 2021, Xie was leaning against a light pole while waiting at the traffic light near the United Nations Plaza on McAllister Street in San Francisco. All of a sudden, Jenkins punched her in the face without provocation.
While wounded, the Chinese-American elderly woman defended herself. With a wooden stick, she fought back and her attacker was later handcuffed to a stretcher with blood around his mouth.
No other information about Jenkins was released aside from his age. KPIX sports director Dennis O’Donnell witnessed his arrest.
“(I am) very traumatized, very scared and this eye is still bleeding,” Xie told KPIX 5 in Chinese, which was translated to English by her daughter Dong-Mei Li. “The right eye still cannot see anything and still bleeding and we have something to absorb the bleeding.”
The aggravated assault is being investigated by the San Francisco Police Department. The suspect is also accused of attacking Vietnamese-American man Ngoc Pham, 83, around 30 minutes before attacking Xie.
Xie’s grandson John Chen set up a GoFundMe page for her. In 4 hours, it raised more than $35,000 of its $50,000 goal.
