Played by Regé-Jean Page, 31, Simon Bassett, Duke of Hastings will not appear in “Bridgerton” Season 2. This was recently confirmed by Shondaland and Netflix.
Considered one of the most eligible bachelors of London, England, Simon refuses to marry. He is the son of Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) and is best friends with Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey).
Daphne Bridgerton Bassett, Duchess of Hastings (Phoebe Dynevor) became entangled in a courting deception with the Duke of Hastings. It became the epicenter of Lady Whistledown‘s gossip column.
With eight episodes, “Bridgerton” Season 1 premiered on Netflix on December 25, 2020. Titled “After the Rain,” the eighth episode was written by the series creator Chris Van Dusen and directed by Alrick Riley.
In “After the Rain,” Daphne found the letters Simon wrote to his father and Lady Danbury filled in the blanks. After spending time with Daphne’s younger siblings, Simon was reconsidering what he wanted and she started to make amends with him.
At the end of the episode, viewers learned that Lady Whistledown is actually Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan). Then a flash forward showed the birth of Daphne and Simon’s first child, a son.
Before playing Simon, Page played Leonard Knox in “For the People” from 2018 to 2019. Shondaland producers approached him about the role of Simon after “For the People” ended.
Page was already aware that his “Bridgerton” character will not be featured for more than one season. He told Variety, “It’s a one-season arc.”
“It’s going to have a beginning, middle, end,” Page continued. “Give us a year. That’s interesting because then it felt like a limited series. I get to come in, I get to contribute my bit and then the Bridgerton family rolls on.”
Among the things “Bridgerton” fans can expect from the second season is that its center of attention will be Anthony. When asked where she would like to see Daphne and Simon’s story go, Dynevor told Harper’s Bazaar, “I think, obviously, if we’re sticking to the books, it’s sort of Anthony’s turn now but there’s no such thing as a happy ending, is there?”
“I think love’s always shifting and changing so who knows?” Dynevor continued. “I’d like to see what happens next and also, I’d like to see Daphne get involved in Anthony’s love life since he was so involved in hers.”
“Bridgerton” is Shonda Rhimes‘ first scripted Netflix series. It is based on Julia Quinn‘s novels.
