Mount Vernon, New York’s Joseph McCrimon’s victims: Rasheeda Barzey, Solei Spears, Chloe Spears

Joseph McCrimon, 46, of Mount Vernon, Westchester County, New York, United States died on the evening of April 5, 2021. Police recovered two guns near his body in a walkway near an apartment in the Van Dyke Houses on Sutter Avenue in the Brownsville neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City, New York.

McCrimon went to that apartment for the ninth birthday of his daughter. He had a relationship with the girl’s mother Rasheeda Barzey, 45, for 20 years.

Barzey lived in that apartment with the girl and her two other daughters Solei Spears, 20, and Chloe Spears, 16. Solie and Chloe are not McCrimon’s daughters.

At around 11:00 p.m. that night, McCrimon shot himself after shooting Barzey, Solei and Chloe. They were all pronounced dead at the scene.

The girl celebrating her birthday, who was unharmed, called 911. The New York City Police Department officers who responded found her hiding in a closet in the apartment.

“The bodyworn camera of her calling 911 just breaks your heart where she’s saying, ‘Daddy’s coming for my birthday. He didn’t bring presents,'” NBC Washington quoted NYPD chief of detectives James Essig as saying. There were no prior 911 calls or domestic violence history involving McCrimon and Barzey, according to Essig.

Barzey was divorced from Solei and Chloe’s father, who is the son of Mary Spears, 70. Mary told the New York Daily News, I love my grandchildren so much.”

“I really can’t talk right now,” Mary continued. “She was a good mother. That’s all I can say, a good mother.”

More than a decade before having a child with Barzey, McCrimon spent years in prison. On Halloween in 1993, he fatally shot Eugene Grant, Jr., then 28, a sanitation worker and a father of five.

That day, Grant was shot in the back after trying to break up a street fight between McCrimon’s nephew and another teenager in Hempstead, Nassau County, New York. In 1995, McCrimon was convicted of first-degree manslaughter.

In September 2000, McCrimon was granted conditional release but in February 2003, he was jailed in the Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining, Westchester County, New York for a certain violation then released in August 2003. In 2013, he pleaded guilty to robbing the Wells Fargo Bank in Ardsley, Westchester County and was sentenced to five years in prison.
