Yasmine Beasley, 23, was recently arrested by the Los Angeles Police Department. Her mugshots have yet to be released.
It is unclear whether Beasley is a transient or a resident of Los Angeles, California, United States. The only detail about her that has been confirmed aside from her age is the fact that she is African American.
On the afternoon of April 9, 2021, Beasley was inside a Metro bus in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles. She allegedly attacked a fellow female passenger, 70, after calling her an anti-Chinese slur.
The victim, who was only identified as Becky, is actually Mexican-American. She and her family have been living in Highland Park, Los Angeles for years.
That day, Becky was supposed to go to a Vons supermarket to shop for her granddaughter. She was trying to get off the bus when she was assaulted by Beasley.
Beasley stopped attacking Becky only when the Mexican American elderly woman called 911. The victim’s son told The Eastsider, “Nobody would help, not even the bus driver.”
Police issued a bulletin and Beasley was later arrested on another bus. On the other hand, Becky was released from the hospital after spending 24 hours there.
Because of the attack, Becky suffered a concussion, hair was pulled out of her head, her nose was broken and her face and eyes were swollen. Her leg was also badly bruised, which compounded a preexisting condition of lupus arthritis and other disabilities.
“We strongly condemn any offenses done in the name of race, religion, sex or national origin,” Metro said a statement obtained by the Los Angeles Times. LAPD spokesperson William Cooper told the publication that he was unaware whether or not prosecutors were pursuing hate crime charges.
Eagle Rock is named after a large rock with a shadow that resembles an eagle with its wings outstretched. The neighborhood is located between Californian cities Glendale and Pasadena.
In 1911, Eagle Rock was incorporated as Eagle Rock City. However, because of need for an adequate water supply and a high school, it was annexed to the city of Los Angeles in 1923.
