Terre Haute, Indiana’s Curtis Hogan leaves explosive device outside police station, booked into Vigo County Jail

Curtis T. Hogan, 50, of Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana, United States has been arrested by the Terre Haute Police Department. He was charged with possession of a destructive device and attempted arson. 

Hogan is accused of leaving a red gasoline container converted into an improvised explosive device (IED) outside the Terre Haute Police Department station on Wabash Avenue in Terre Haute at around 12:41 a.m. on April 24, 2021. The container had ammunition and nails inside.

A passer-by found the gas container, which caused a small fire. Officers extinguished the fire and no one was injured.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was contacted about the incident. The Terre Haute Police Department found out that the gas container was sold at the home improvement store Lowe’s.

Investigators were able to track down a purchase of the gas container, paint thinner and nails. The Terre Haute Police Department took to social media to share surveillance photos of the suspect and immediately received numerous tips, which led to the arrest of Hogan.

At 8:57 p.m., Hogan was booked into Vigo County Jail in Terre Haute. He was being held without bond with a hearing pending in Vigo Superior Court 6, according to Tribune-Star.

Aside from Terre Haute, Hogan has lived in other parts of Indiana including Indianapolis, Clinton and Brownsburg. When he was arrested in Terre Haute, officers found a Lowe’s receipt of newly purchased gas container, paint thinner and nails, WTHI-TV reported.

Terre Haute is the county seat of Vigo County. Known as the Queen City of the Wabash and located along the Wabash River, the city is one of the largest cities in the Wabash Valley, a region located in sections of both Indiana and Illinois, USA.

Duke A. Bennett is the incumbent mayor of Terre Haute. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Grant County, Indiana in 2006 and has been serving as the Terre Haute’s mayor since 2008.
