Pasquotank County, North Carolina’s Samuel Jacob Hickman in Norfolk jail after being shot by Camden County deputy

Samuel Jacob Hickman, 25, of Pasquotank County, North Carolina, United States has been arrested by the Camden County Sheriff’s Office. He was charged with first-degree burglary, assault by pointing a gun, assault on a female and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.

Hickman is accused of trying to break into the house of his former girlfriend in South Mills, Camden County, North Carolina while he was intoxicated on the evening of May 1, 2021. She was with two children in the house at that time.

The woman called 911 and while she was providing information, Hickman allegedly fired a shotgun through the back door of the house and made entry. Screaming was heard before the 911 call was disconnected, The Virginian-Pilot has learned.

When Camden County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrive as the house at around 9:18 p.m. that evening, he was no longer there. He fled in a white Toyota Tacoma and did not comply when a Camden County Sheriff’s Office deputy tried to stop the car on Pier Landing Loop Road in South Mill.

Instead, Hickman stopped in the middle of the road, exited the car and pointed a shotgun at the deputy, who responded by shooting him several times. The suspect was rushed to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia where his injuries were treated, according to WTKR.

After being discharged from the hospital, Hickman was booked into a jail in Norfolk. He is expected to be extradited to North Carolina.

Originally created as Pasquotank Precinct, Pasquotank County gained county status in 1739. Its county seat is Elizabeth City.

At around 8:30 a.m. on April 21, 2021, Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office deputies served Andrew Brown Jr., 42, with a warrant at his home in Elizabeth City. When he got into his car and started to drive away, one of the deputies fatally shot him.
