Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, United States, Sharnez Hill, 30, and her three-month-old daughter Neziah Hill were shot on the evening of April 27, 2021. A woman, 29, a girl, 15, and another girl, 11, whose names were not released, were also injured during the shooting.
At around 6:30 p.m. that evening, five gunmen namely Shyheem Martin, 23, Donald Hemmings, 22, Shamondrick Tyale Perry, 19, Kevon Bynum, 18, and Kavon Bynum, 18, allegedly targeted a single apartment at The Belt Atlantic Apartments on Midlothian Turnpike in Richmond. Kevon and Kavon are twins.
Instead of shooting the target, the suspects instead shot Sharnez, Neziah and the three other victims. According to the Richmond Police Department, the five victims were innocent bystanders and not the target of the shooting.
“We know there was a group of perpetrators who began the shooting,” NBC 12 quoted Richmond Police Department chief Gerald Smith as saying. “That first group of perpetrators we believe are the ones who actually struck these five innocent victims.”
Sharnez died on the scene while Neziah was rushed to the hospital where she later died. The other three victims are in stable condition.
At 4:50 p.m. on April 28, 2021, the Richmond Police Department announced that Martin, Hemmings and Perry have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Perry and Hemmings were arraigned at 9:05 a.m. that day while Martin was arraigned at 9:05 a.m. on April 29, 2021.
On May 5, 2021, Kavon was arrested by the Richmond Police Department with the help of the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force without incident. He was charged with first-degree murder.
On May 6, 2021, Kevon was arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder. It was the final arrest in relation to the shooting of Sharnez, Neziah and the other three victims, according to Richmond Police Department Area 1 commander acting major Rick Edwards.
“We know that there was a group of perpetrators who began shooting,” People quoted Richmond Police Department chief Gerald Smith as saying. “That first group of perpetrators, we believe are the ones who actually struck these five innocent victims and there was another group, another side that actually returned fire.”
“At this point in time, we don’t believe they actually struck anybody,” Smith continued. “But what you have is, if you’ve been to that area, the way that that area is set up, there are courtyards out there and they were shooting across those courtyards.”
