Katie Whittier attended the University of Maine in Orono, Maine, United States. From 2003 to 2007, she played for the women’s basketball team of the university.
On May 16, 2010, Whittier represented Maine at Miss USA 2010 and competed against 50 other candidates at the Planet Hollywood Theatre for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. She was fourth runner-up to Michigan’s Rima Fakih.
Currently, Maine has nine placements at Miss USA. The highest one was in 2010 when Katie Whittier was fourth runner-up and the most recent one was in 2018 when Marina Gray finished in the Top 10.
On May 21, 2019, Gray represented Maine at Miss USA 2018 at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport, Louisiana, USA. She competed against 50 other candidates including Nebraska’s Sarah Rose Summers, who won the title.
Miss Maine USA 2021
On November 10, 2019, Julia van Steenberghe of Old Town, Penobscot County, Maine was crowned Miss Maine USA 2020 at the Portland Sheraton at Sable Oaks in South Portland. The respective first, second, third and fourth runners-up were Hannah Fleming, Moriah Biener, Sarah Phelps and Jamie Ford.
On June 10, 2021, van Steenberghe will crown her successor at the Sheraton Sable Oaks in South Portland. It is the 70th edition of the state-level beauty pageant that selects Maine’s official candidate for Miss USA, which selects the official Miss Universe candidate from the U.S.
