Keon Rodgers, 19, of Chicago, Illinois, United States has been arrested. He was charged with first-degree murder.
In March 2019, Rodgers’ then girlfriend gave birth to their child. He was no longer in a relationship with the woman when he used her photos in December 2019 to create an online profile of a woman named Yari T.
On December 31, 2019, the former girlfriend gave Rodgers photos of herself and her email address. He uploaded the photos in the fake profile.
Using the fake profile, Rodgers communicated with Devondrey Exavious Cummings, then 26, of Joliet, Illinois, who agreed to meet who he thought was a woman named Yari T. for a sexual encounter at a location on South Michigan Avenue in Chicago on January 2, 2020. Cummings did show up that day in the said location where he was robbed and fatally shot.
Rodgers is accused of planning the fatal robbery and committing it with two accomplices. One accomplice is 2 years younger and the other accomplice is 1 year younger than Rodgers.
After being identified as the gunman who killed Cummings, Rodgers was arrested on June 18, 2021. During a bail hearing on June 20, 2021, Judge John F. Lyke Jr. set a $1 million cash bail for him, the Chicago Tribune reported.
“If this is true, the amount of energy that went into this, to rob somebody and ultimately kill them is utterly outrageous,” Lyke said. The judge added that it is despicable to lure some unsuspecting victim.
It is still unclear if Rodgers’ former girlfriend was involved in catfishing Cummings. Rodgers is expected to return to court on June 28, 2021.
A reality show about online dating called “Catfish: The TV Show” premiered on MTV on November 12, 2012. It is currently co-hosted by Sarah Lawrence College alum Yaniv “Nev” Schulman, 36, of New York, USA and Miss Teen USA 2010 Kameran “Kamie” Crawford, 28, of Maryland, USA.
Schulman was a victim of catfishing himself prior to hosting the MTV series. He married Laura Perlongo, 35, of Michigan, USA in 2017 and they now have two children.
