Nesthy Petecio biography: 13 things about Olympic boxer born in Davao del Sur, Philippines

Nesthy Alcayde Petecio is a Filipino boxer. She was born in Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur, Philippines to Teodoro Petecio and Prescilla Petecio.

Petecio’s younger brother Norlan Petecio and young sister Nicezza Petecio are also boxers. Their father taught them how to box when they were children.

Petecio is 5’2″ tall and fights mainly in the bantamweight and featherweight divisions. Here are 13 more things about her:

  1. In 1999, she started boxing in Davao.
  2. In 2003, she defeated a male opponent, who was bigger than her, in a boxing match at the Araw ng Davao in Rizal Park, Davao City, Philippines.
  3. In 2007, she won gold in boxing at the Smart National Youth and Women’s Open Boxing Championships in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines-Calinan boxing team recruitered her in the same year.
  4. She won silver in boxing at the 2011 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
  5. She won bronze in boxing in the 2012 Asian Championships.
  6. She won silver in boxing at the 2013 SEA Games.
  7. She won silver in boxing at the 2014 AIBA Women’s World Championships.
  8. She won gold in boxing at the 2015 Indonesia President’s Cup.
  9. She finished third in boxing in the women’s lightweight division at the 2017 President’s Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan and ninth in boxing in the women’s featherweight division at the 2017 Asian Championships in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
  10. She was the boxing champion in the women’s featherweight division at the 2018 Feliks Stamm in Warsaw Poland. She finished ninth in boxing in women’s featherweight division at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.
  11.  She won gold in boxing at the 2019 Thailand Open International Boxing Championship, the 2019 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and the 2019 SEA Games. She finished ninth in boxing in women’s featherweight division at the 2019 Asian Championships in Bangkok, Thailand.
  12. On March 9, 2020, she lost via majority decision to Sena Irie of Japan in an amateur boxing bout in the women’s featherweight division at the Prince Hamza Hall in Amman, Jordan.
  13. She was 29 years old when she represented the Philippines at the 2020 Summer Olympics, which took place in Tokyo, Japan from July 23, 2021 to August 8, 2021. On August 3, 2021, she won silver in boxing in the women’s featherweight division after losing to Irie in the final round, making her the first female fighter representing the Philippines to win a medal in boxing in the Olympics.
