Miss Universe Singapore 2020 Bernadette Belle Ong, 27, will crown her successor on September 17, 2021. Livestreamed at The Front Row, it will be the second edition of the national beauty pageant that selects Singapore’s Miss Universe candidate under Valerie Lim’s directorship.
Miss Universe Singapore was not held in 2020 due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The title was assigned to Ong, who was a finalist in the inaugural edition under Lim’s directorship.
Singapore started competing in Miss Universe in 1954. The country did not send a candidate from 1955 to 1957, from 1959 to 1960 and from 1962 to 1965 then started sending a candidate annually in 1966.
In 1983, Kathie Lee Lee Beng finished in the Top 12, making her the first Singaporean candidate to place in Miss Universe. The second one was Marion Nicole Teo, who finished in the Top 10 in 1987.
It is surprising that no other candidate from Singapore placed in Miss Universe after Beng and Teo considering that the country, which is known for its development and diversity, is home to beautiful, strong and independent women. Perhaps, Miss Universe Singapore has to do something drastically different to end this drought.
There are eight women competing for the Miss Universe Singapore 2021 title. After checking the profiles, photos and videos of the candidates, these are the three women who I believe will, and shall, win:
