Brian Laundrie, 23, of North Port, Florida, United States and Gabrielle “Gabby” Petito, 22, of Blue Point, New York, USA parked their white 2012 Ford Transit van near Moonflower Community Cooperative in Moab, Utah, USA on August 12, 2021. A witness saw the couple arguing over a phone that day.
The witness then called 911 over possible domestic violence and Moab Police Department officers responded to the scene. Laundrie told one of the officers that Petito tried to slap him because she thought he was going to leave her in Moab without a ride.
“The witness stated that when Brian got into the van, he saw what appeared to him as Gabrielle hitting Brian in the arm and then climbing through the driver’s window as if Brian had locked her out and she was trying to find a way in,” a Moab Police Department officer wrote in a report obtained by Fox News. According to the report, Petito stayed with the van that night while Laundrie stayed in a hotel.
No one reported that Laundrie struck Petito, according to the report. It added that they both reported “they are in love and engaged to be married and desperately didn’t wish to see anyone charged with a crime.”
When Laundrie and Petito started dating in 2019, she moved with him in his home in North Port. In July 2020, they got engaged.
On June 17, 2021, Laundrie and Petito went to Blue Point to attend her brother’s high school graduation. On July 2, 2021, they left her hometown and started their cross-country camping trip across the U.S.
Petito was in Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, USA when she spoke to her mother Nichole Schmidt via FaceTime on August 25, 2021. That was Petito’s last known location.
On September 1, 2021, Laundrie drove their white 2012 Ford Transit van back to North Port. On September 10, 2021, the van was recovered at his family’s home.
On September 11, 2021, Schmidt reported Petito missing to the Suffolk County Police Department. On September 15, 2021, the North Port Police Department named Laundrie a person of interest in the investigation and said he is not cooperating with authorities.
“It is our understanding that a search has been organized for Miss Petito in or near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming,” Laundrie’s attorney Steven Bertolino told WFLA. “On behalf of the boyfriend’s family, it is our hope that the search for Miss Petito is successful and that Miss Petito is reunited with her family.”
