Thor Bjornsson biography: 13 things about Icelandic strongman, actor, boxer


Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, also known as Thor Bjornsson, is an Icelandic professional strongman, actor and boxer born in Reykjavik, Iceland. He is also a former professional basketball player.

Before marrying Kelsey Henson, who is 5’2″, Bjornsson dated Thelma Björk Steimann then Andrea Sif Jónsdóttir. He and Steimann have one daughter together.

Bjornsson is 6’9″ tall. Here are 13 more things about him:

  1. In 2004, he made his professional basketball debut by playing for Breiðablik, a multisport club based in Kópavogur, Iceland. He moved to Íþróttafélag FSu, a basketball club in Selfoss, Iceland, in 2005 and to KR Basket, a basketball club based in Reykjavík, in 2006.
  2. From 2007 to 2008, he played again for Íþróttafélag FSu, which was renamed Körfuknattleiksfélag FSu in 2010 and Körfuknattleiksfélag Selfoss (Selfoss-Basket) in 2018.
  3. In 2010, he won Strongest Man in Iceland, Iceland’s Strongest Viking, Westfjords Viking and five of six events at the OK Badur Strongman Championships. In the same year, he was runner-up to Brian Shaw at the inaugural Jón Páll Sigmarsson Classic.
  4. In 2011, he won Iceland’s Strongest Man, finished fourth in the Giants Live Poland and finished sixth when he made his World’s Strongest Man debut. At the World’s Strongest Man, he finished third in 2012, 2013 and 2015. He was runner-up to Žydrūnas Savickas in 2014, to Shaw in 2016 and to Eddie Hall in 2017. He finally won in 2018.
  5. From 2014 to 2019, he played Gregor Clegane in “Game of Thrones.” He won Europe’s Strongest Man in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019. 
  6. In 2015, he appeared in the documentary film “Eddie: Strongman” and the game show “A League of Their Own.” In the same year, he carried a 1,430 lbs (650 kg) log for five steps at the World’s Strongest Viking in Norway, breaking a 1,000-year-old record set by Orm Storolfsson.
  7. In 2016, he co-founded the spirits brand Icelandic Mountain Vodka.
  8. In 2017, he played Big John in “Operation Ragnarok,” Psycho Phil Bell in “The Beast” and Mongkut in “Kickboxer: Retaliation.” In the same year, he was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy and started dating Henson. They got married in 2018 and she gave birth to their first son in 2020.
  9. He won gold at the Arnold Strongman Classic in 2018, 2019 and 2020, making him the second person to win three times in a row after Savickas.
  10. In 2019, he played Frank in “Pharaoh’s War.”
  11. On February 15, 2020, he deadlifted on the elephant bar with 1,058 lbs (480 kg). On May 2, 2020, he deadlifted a record-setting 1,105 lbs (501 kg) under strongman rules at his gym in Iceland.
  12. Held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, his boxing bouts against Steven Ward on January 16, 2021 and Simon Vallily on May 28, 2021 both ended in a draw. On September 18, 2021, he and Devon Larratt will headline “Core Sports Fight Night 3” in Dubai. They will battle it out in a heavyweight boxing bout.
