Brian Laundrie, 23, of North Port, Florida, United States is accused of using a Capital One Bank card and using someone’s personal identification number to make unauthorized withdrawals or charges during the period Gabrielle “Gabby” Petito, 22, of Blue Point, New York, USA went missing. A federal grand jury indicted him on September 22, 2021.
The indictment does not mention the name of the card’s owner. On September 23, 2021, Laundrie was charged with unauthorized use of a debit card and an arrest warrant was issued for him.
Brian and Gabby attended Bayport-Blue Point High School in Bayport, Town of Islip, Suffolk County together. When they started dating in 2019, she moved to North Port and lived with him and his parents.
An aspiring travel blogger, Gabby started her cross-country trip with Brian on July 2, 2021. They travelled across the U.S. in her white 2012 Ford Transit van.
On August 25, 2021, Gabby spoke to Schmidt on a FaceTime call. The mother had not heard from her daughter since then.
Between August 30, 2021 and September 1, 2021, Brian allegedly used a debit card and PIN number for accounts that did not belong to him for charges over $1,000. On September 1, 2021, he drove Gabby’s van back to North Port without her.
On September 11, 2021, Schmidt reported Gabby missing. On September 15, 2021, Brian was named a person of interest in the investigation.
On September 17, 2021, Chris and Roberta reported Brian missing. On September 19, 2021, Gabby’s body was found deceased at the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area in the Bridger-Teton National Forest on the east boundary of Grand Teton National Park in Teton County, Wyoming, USA.
On September 21, 2021, a coroner made an initial determination that Gabby died by homicide. On September 23, 2021, the North Port Police Department announced that it had halted its search for Brian at the T. Mabry Carlton Jr. Memorial Reserve in Sarasota County, Florida and that search teams would be back on September 24, 2021.
