The driver of a red Ford Escape sport utility vehicle killed Wilhelm Hospel, 81, Virginia “Ginny” Sorenson, 79, LeAnna Owen, 71, Tamara Durand, 52, and Jane Kulich, 52, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, United States on November 21, 2021. At 4:39 p.m. that day, the SUV plowed into crowds at the city’s 58th annual holiday parade.
Kulich was a Citizen Bank employee. Sorenson, Owen and Durand were members of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies and Hospel was the husband a member of the group of elderly women known for participating in parades.
It was the first time Durand performed with the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies. A Waukesha Memorial hospice and critical care chaplain, she was recognized for saving a homeless man from drowning in the Wisconsin River in 2009.
Durand was “literally danced her way through life,” according to her husband David “David” Durand, 52. He told The Daily Beast that she was the youngest member of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies.
“Dancing was her favorite thing,” Dave said of Tamara. “It was her first time even with them, which is what’s so tragic, too.”
Sorensen was a registered nurse. She was married to David “Dave” Sorenson for 56 years and was a member of the Milwaukee Dancing Grannies for 19 years.
“They were short help so she offered to hold the banner going down the street so she did that,” Dave said of his wife in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal. “I was at the end in the car. I was sitting in the car waiting.”
Also known as MathBoi Fly, rapper Darrell Edward Brooks Jr., 39, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin was allegedly the driver of the SUV. He was arrested and is expected to appear at the Waukesha County Courthouse on November 23, 2021.
At least 48 people were also injured by the crash. Minutes prior to the crash, Brooks was allegedly leaving the scene of a domestic dispute.
