Iman Asante Shumpert is an African-American professional basketball player and rapper born in Berwyn, Illinois, United States to Odis Shumpert and L’Tanya Sumpert. Iman is 6’5″ tall and his registered weight is 212 lbs.

Amid the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2021, Iman became the first ever National Basketball Association player to qualify for the finals of the ABC dance competition series “Dancing with the Stars” and the first one to win. Here are 13 more things about him:


  1. He played basketball at Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School and Oak Park and River Forest High School, which are both in Oak Park, Illinois.
  2. From 2008 to 2011, he attended Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, where he also played basketball.
  3. In 2011, he made his NBA debut. He played for the New York Knicks from 2011 to 2015.
  4. In 2012, he released the song “Knicks Anthem” and the mixtape “Th3 #Post90s.” He was selected to compete in the 2012 NBA All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest but due to a knee injury, he was not able to participate.
  5.  In 2013, he released the song “Dear Kendrick” in response to Kendrick Lamar‘s verse in Big Sean‘s song “Control.”
  6. In 2015, singer, songwriter, actress and model Teyana Taylor gave birth to their first daughter. From 2015 to 2018, he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
  7. On October 1, 2016, he and Taylor got married.
  8. From 2018 to 2019, he played for the Sacramento Kings.
  9. On February 7, 2019, the Houston Rockets acquired him in a three-team trade. 
  10. On November 13, 2019, he signed with the Brooklyn Nets. On December 12, 2019, he was waived by the team.
  11. On September 6, 2020, Taylor gave birth to their second daughter Rue Rose Shumpert in the bathroom of their house in Atlanta.
  12. On January 30, 2021, he signed a deal to return to the Brooklyn Nets.
  13. On November 22, 2021, he and his professional dancing partner Daniella Karagach were announced as the winners of “Dancing with the Stars” Season 30.
