The republic of South Sudan is a landlocked country in Africa. It is bordered by Sudan to the north, Ethiopia to the east, the Central African Republic to the west, the Democratic of the Congo to the southwest, Kenya to the southeast and Uganda to the south.
In 2011, South Sudan gained independence from the Republic of the Sudan. This makes the former the most recent sovereign country or state with widespread recognition as of 2021.
Salva Kiir Mayardit, 70, is the incumbent and first president of South Sudan. He assumed office of July 9, 2011.
