Jacqueline “Jacquie” Avant was born Jacqueline Alberta Gray in Jamaica, Queens, New York, United States. As an influential music executive, her husband Clarence Avant is dubbed the Godfather of Black Music in America.

  1. Passionate about fine arts, she served on boards for the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena, California, USA and the East Asian Art Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). She was the two-term board president of the Museum of African American Art in Los Angeles, California. She also served on the board of the International Student Center at the University of California, Los Angeles
  2. In 1967, she and Clarence got married in New York. After their wedding, they moved to Beverly Hills, California.
  3. In March 1968, she gave birth to her daughter Nicole A. Avant.
  4. In August 1971, she gave birth to her son Alexander Du Bois Avant.
  5. In 1974, she was the entertainment chairman of the NOW benefit auction and dinner dance and the chairwoman of NOW membership.
  6. In 1975, she served as president of the Neighbors of Watts, the support group for the South Central Community Child Care Center.
  7. He and Clarence spent $26,000 to help elect Thomas “Tom” Bradley, the 38th mayor and first black mayor of Los Angeles. Bradley held the position from July 1, 1973 to July 1, 1993.
  8. On January 22, 2022, she and Clarence attended the 11th Annual African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Awards in Los Angeles.
  9. With her in the audience, Clarence was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in May 2021.
  10. At around 2:25 a.m. on December 1, 2021, Aariel Maynor, then 29, broke into her house in Trousdale Estates, Beverly Hills and fatally shot her. She died at the age of 81.
