The Republic of the Gambia is situated on both sides of the Gambia River’s lower reaches. Except for its western coast on the Atlantic Ocean, the West African country is surrounded by Senegal.
With a total area of 11,295 km2, the Gambia is the smallest country within mainland Africa. The country achieved its independence from the United Kingdom on February 18, 1965 and permanently withdrew from the Senegambia Confederation on September 30, 1989.
Adama Barrow, 56, the incumbent and third president of the Gambia, assumed office on January 19, 2017. He was reelected on December 4, 2021.
