Africa is the second largest continent and the second most populous continents. It has five regions namely Northern Africa, Eastern Africa, Middle Africa, Western Africa and Southern Africa.

There are 54 fully recognized sovereign states, eight territories and two de facto independent states in Africa. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Isthmus of Suez and the Red Sea to the northeast, the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Indian Ocean to the southeast.

Founded on July 9, 2022, the African Union consists of 55 members states. Its incumbent and 20th chairperson Macky Sall, 60, of Senegal assumed office on February 5, 2022.
