Asia has 49 United Nations member states, four largely unrecognized de facto states and two states with substantial but not general international recognition. The continent also has six dependencies including the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia.

Covering an area of 44,579,000 square kilometers, Asia is Earth’s largest and most populous continent. It is bounded on the north by the Arctic Ocean, on the east by the Pacific Ocean and on the south by the Indian Ocean.
