The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia. Also called Kampuchea, the country is bordered by Laos to the north, Thailand to the northwest, Vietnam to the east and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest.

In 1863, Cambodia became a protectorate of France. Cambodia gained independence from France on November 9, 1953 and was admitted to the United Nations on December 14, 1955.

Monarchy was restored in Cambodia after a U.N. mission governed the country from 1992 to 1993. Norodom Sihamoni, 68, has been reigning as the country’s king since October 14, 2004.
