The Union of the Comoros is an island country in Eastern Africa. Situated in the Indian Ocean, the country shares maritime borders with the Seychelles to the northeast, Tanzania to the northwest, Mozambique to the west and Madagascar and Mayotte to the southeast.

The Comoros gained its independence from France on July 6, 1975 and was admitted to the United Nations on November 12, 1975. The Comoros became a federal Islamic republic on October 1, 1978 then a union on December 23, 2001.

Azali Assoumani, 63, is the incumbent president of the Comoros. He assumed office on May 26, 2019.
