The Republic of Cyprus is an island country in Western Asia. Greek and Turkish are the official languages of the country, which is located north of Egypt, northwest of Lebanon, Israel and the Gaza Strip, west of Syria, southeast of Greece and south of Turkey.

Cyprus proclaimed its independence from the United Kingdom on August 16, 1960 and was admitted to the United Nations on September 20, 1960. On May 1, 2004, Cyprus joined the European Union.

Nicos Anastasiades, 75, is the incumbent and seventh president of Cyprus. He assumed office on February 28, 2013 and was reelected on January 28, 2018.
