Officially called the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, East Timor is an island country in Southeast Asia. The country comprises an exclave called Oecusse, the islands of Atauro and Jaco and the eastern half of the island of Timor.

Colonized by Portugal in the 16th century, East Timor declared independence on November 28, 1975 but was annexed by Indonesia on July 17, 1976. The independence of East Timor was restored on May 20, 2002.

On September 27, 2002, East Timor was admitted to the United Nations. The country’s incumbent and sixth president Francisco Guterres, 67, assumed office on May 20, 2017.
