The State of Eritrea is a country in Eastern Africa. The country is bordered by Sudan in the west, Djibouti in the southeast and Ethiopia in the south.

Eritrea gained its de facto independence from Ethiopia on May 24, 1991 and its de jure independence from Ethiopia on May 24, 1993. On November 13, 1945, Eritrea was admitted to the United Nations.

Isaias Afwerki, 75, is the incumbent president of Eritrea. He assumed office on May 24, 1993.
