The Republic of Guinea is a coastal country in West Africa. Formerly known as French Guinea, the country borders Senegal to the north, Mali to the northeast, Guinea-Bissau to the northwest, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Cote d’Ivoire to the southeast and Sierra Leone and Liberia to the south.

France established French Guinea in 1891 and the latter gained independence from the former on October 2, 1958. On December 12, 1958, Guinea was admitted to the United Nations.

In 2010, Guinea held its first democratic election. Mamady Doumbouya, 41, has been the country’s interim president since October 1, 2021.
