The Republic of Latvia is a country in Northern Europe. The country is bordered by Estonia to the north, Russia to the east, Belarus to the southeast and Lithuania to the south and shares a maritime border with Sweden to the west.

Latvia declared its independence from Germany and the Soviet Union on November 18, 1918, which was recognized on January 26, 1921, and was admitted to the United Nations on September 17, 1991. On May 1, 2004, Latvia joined the European Union.
