Malaysia is a country in Southeast Asia and is one of the 17 megadiverse countries. The South China Sea separates the country’s 13 states and three federal territories into two regions namely Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia.

The Federation of Malaya was admitted to the United Nations on September 17, 1957. The federation merged with the British crown colonies of North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore on September 16, 1963 to form the new Federation of Malaysia but on August 9, 1965, Singapore separated from the federation.
