Located in Oceania, Melanesia has five countries territories namely Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Most of the languages of the region are members of the Austronesian language family or one of the numerous Papuan languages.

Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are members of the Melanesian Spearhead Group. Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are members of the Commonwealth of Nations.
