The Republic of Nicaragua is a country in Central America. The country is bordered by Honduras to the northwest, the Caribbean to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest and Costa Rica to the south.

Nicaragua gained its independence from the Federal Republic of Central America on May 31, 1838 and was admitted to the United Nations on October 24, 1945. The country’s current constitution was adopted on January 9, 1987.

Daniel Ortega, 76, is the incumbent president of Nicaragua. He assumed office on January 10, 2007 and was reelected on November 6, 2011, on November 6, 2016 and November 7, 2021.
