The Republic of the Niger is the second largest landlocked country in Western Africa behind Chad. Named after the Niger River, the Niger is bordered by Chad to the east, Libya to the northeast, Algeria to the northwest, Mali to the west, Benin and Burkina Faso to the southwest and Nigeria to the south.

On July 11, 1960, the Niger decided to leave the French Community, an association of former French colonies. The country acquired full independence from France on August 3, 1960 and was admitted to the United Nations on September 20, 1960.

Mohamed Bazoum, 61, is the incumbent president of the Niger, which is also a charter member of the African Union and the West African Monetary Union. He assumed office on April 2, 2021.
