The Republic of North Macedonia is a country in Southern Europe bordering Serbia to the north, Kosovo to the northwest, Bulgaria to the east, Albania to the west and Greece to the south. Macedonian and Albanian are North Macedonia’s official languages.

In 146 BC, the Roman Empire established the province of Macedonia. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia were the parts of Yugoslavia, a country created on December 1, 1918.

Macedonia changed its name from the People’s Republic of Macedonia to the Socialist Republic of Macedonia in 1963, gained its independence from Yugoslavia on September 8, 1991, joined the United nations on April 8, 1993 and changed is name again to the Republic of North Macedonia in 2019. North Macedonia’s incumbent and fifth president Stevo Pendarovski, 58, assumed office on May 12, 2019.
