The Republic of Slovenia is a country in Central Europe. The country is bordered by Austria to the north, Hungary to the northeast, Italy to the west, Croatia to the southeast and the Adriatic Sea to the southwest.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia were the parts of Yugoslavia, a country created on December 1, 1918 and renamed in 1963 as the Social Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. On June 25, 1991, Slovenia gained its independence from Yugoslavia.

Slovenia joined the United nations on May 22, 1992 and the European Union on May 1, 2004. The country’s incumbent and fourth president Borut Pahor, 58, assumed office on December 22, 2012.
