The Syrian Arab Republic is a country in Western Asia. The country borders Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east and southeast, the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Israel and Lebanon to the southwest and Jordan to the south.

Syria was admitted to the United Nations on October 24, 1945 then left the United Arab Republic on September 28, 1961. Syria’s current constitution was adopted on February 27, 2012.

Bashar al-Assad, 56, is the incumbent and 19th president of Syria. He assumed office on July 17, 2000 and was reelected on May 27, 2007, on July 16, 2014 and on May 26, 2021.
